【單字片語】

1. SUBMARINE (名詞) 潛艇、潛水艇、潛艦。

Submarine 基本上就是能夠在水下運行的船，
Sub- (字首) 的意思是「少於、低於」，
Marine (形容詞) 的意思是「海洋的、航海的、海運的」，
所以 sub + marine 就等於低於海洋的！

相關字有
Navy (名詞) 海軍，
比如說海軍藍的英文就是 navy blue!

朗讀文章裡出現片段：
Indonesian navy ships searched Thursday for a submarine that likely sank too deep to retrieve. 印尼海軍艦船週四在搜索一艘潛艇，該潛艇可能沉沒得太深而無法取回。

另一個相關字：
Sank (過去式動詞) 沈下去了
來自 sink 這個單字，
sink, sinking, sank。

2. RUN OUT

Run out 是一個 phrasal verb，所以我們可以去變化 run 這個動詞的詞性，
Run out, running out, ran out.

其實在某些狀況下 run out 也可以表達「跑出去」的，
例如：She ran out to get some food. 她 (跑) 出去買食物了。

⚠️ 但更常見的是文章裡的意思「用完、耗盡、賣光」。

朗讀文章裡：
Authorities said oxygen in the submarine would run out by early Saturday. 當局說潛水艇中的氧氣將在周六初耗盡。

也常用在時間上，如：
Time is running out 剩下的時間不多了
OR
跟時間賽跑的英文可以說 race against time
或 race against the clock.

Race against time / the clock 有兩種常見的用法。

名詞用法：
Search and rescue operations are often a race against time. 搜救行動常常是一場與時間的賽跑。

動詞用法，
而且可以變換 race 這個動詞的詞性變成:

• race against time / the clock
• racing against time / the clock
• raced against time / the clock

例如：
The Indonesian navy is racing against time to rescue personnel trapped inside a missing submarine. 印尼海軍正在與時間賽跑，以營救被困在失踪潛艇內的人員。

3. UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT (片語) 身份不明的物體

我們先來個簡單拆解，
如果把 unidentified 一開始的 “un” 移除會剩下 identified,
Identified 裡有 identify – (動詞) 辨認 – 的影子。

So, 加 “un” 就會變成反義，
Unidentified (形容詞) 是「未知的、還沒有被辨識出身份的」的意思。

Object 這個名詞的意思是「物體」。

朗讀文章裡…
He said rescuers 搜救人員 found an unidentified object with high magnetism 磁性 (eg. magnet 磁鐵) at a depth of 50 to 100 meters and that officials 官方單位 / 官員 hope it’s the submarine.

如果在 unidentified 和 object 中間加上 “flying” 就會變成
UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) 幽浮、不明飛行物體！

4. DEPTH (名詞) 深度

朗讀文章裡：
The navy believes the submarine sank to a depth of 600-700 meters, much deeper than its estimated collapse depth. 海軍認為，該潛艇沉沒深度為600-700米，比其估計的塌陷深度要深得多。

Depth 的相關形容詞是 deep，意思是「深的」。
可以延伸出 deeper 更深，
和 deepest 最深。

Collapse depth 是什麼意思? 是某種深度嗎？
Collapse 是「倒塌、垮掉」的意思，
所以 collapse depth 就是「會垮掉的深度」，
指這個潛水艇在某個深度以下就會有垮掉的危險。

例如朗讀文章裡有說：
So they can survive 生存 at that depth, but not necessarily 不見得 operate 操作

5. CREW (名詞) 全體工作人員

Crew 常用在表達全體

• 船員
• (飛)機組人員
• 電視電影拍攝 e.g. TV crew, camera crew

朗讀文章裡：
Indonesian President Joko Widodo asked all of the country’s people to pray that the submarine and crew could be found. 印尼總統 懇求 全國人民祈禱 能找到潛艇和船員。

Crew 有一個很接近的相關單字，
Staff (名詞) 全體員工，全體僱員
如：

The staff are not very happy about the latest pay increase. 員工們對最近一次加薪不太滿意。

那什麼時候要用 crew, 什麼時候要用 staff?
In general,

• Staff 常用在公司、企業、工廠、醫院 (medical staff) 裡。
  • PS: 工廠也常見 workers, i.e. factory workers
• Crew 常用在船（船務、海運、海軍)、飛航（飛機上的、空軍)、電視電影拍攝的 (演員以外的)。
  • 演員們通常叫 cast。

⚠️ 有一個職稱叫 Chief of Staff，
如果是出現這個職稱的狀況，即使在船務等 (以上說會用 crew 的地方)，
也不會變成 Chief of Crew 喔！😄
Chief of Staff 的中文是什麼？
如果在軍中是「參謀長」，
在大企業和機構裡則類似「幕僚長」。
