COVID 相關報導出現好多的大額數字！🤪 所以先來個：
【數字對照】
逼進死亡人數：200,000
唸 two hundred thousand 二十萬。
週二死亡人數：2,771
可以唸 twenty-seven hundred (and) seventy-one OR
two thousand seven hundred (and) seventy-one (比較常見)。
印度人口 population: 1.3 billion
1 billion 等於 10 億，so 1.3 billion 就等於 13 億。
確診總人數：17.64 million
1 million 是 100 萬，所以 10 million 是 1,000 萬，and 17.64 million 就等於 1,764 萬。
週二確診：323,144
唸 three hundred (and) twenty-three thousand one hundred (and) forty-four。
週一確診數 我在朗讀裡是直接簡化成 over 350,000，
唸 three hundred (and) fifty thousand。
實際數字其實是 352,991，
唸 three hundred (and) fifty-two thousand nine hundred ninety-one，
那印度已連續六天單日確診超過 300,000 (三十萬)，
唸 three hundred thousand。

【人物地點中英文對照】
1. India 印度
2. World Health Organization (WHO) 世界衛生組織
WHO 這種簡稱是一種 acronym，首字母縮寫詞的意思。
為什麼唸 W-H-O 不是唸 Who?
這個沒有一定的規則，
但通常比較短 (不超過 4 個字母) 的 acronyms 會把字母唸出來，
如 KMT (國民黨)、DPP (民進黨)、TSMC (台積電) 等。
WHO 剛好就落在這比較短的
比較長的 acronyms 則通常會取音來唸，
如前幾集 Ep 10 裡提到的澳洲航空 Qantas、還有 UNICEF 聯合國兒童基金會等。

全名為「德里國家首都轄區 National Capital Territory of Delhi」，簡稱 NCT，
印度的首都 New Delhi 新德里就位於 NCT 內。

1. COVID, COVID-19 新冠肺炎
疫情剛爆發時媒體都會使用 “Wuhan coronavirus 武漢肺炎”,
近期都改用 COVID / COVID-19，
也很常會看到直接用 “coronavirus“ 代表，
還有！之前 Trump 說的 “Chinese virus 中國病毒” 😄 也都是指 COVID。
2. 新型冠狀病毒 SARS-CoV-2
SARS-CoV-2 有一個很長的全名，
severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2，
嚴重急性呼吸道症候群冠狀病毒2型，
常常會直接稱為 “the COVID-19 virus”
Why 冠狀? Coronavirus 裡的 “Corona” 是什麼意思?
They have characteristic club-shaped spikes 棍狀尖峰 that project 突出 from their surface 表面, which in electron micrographs 電子顯微照片 create an image reminiscent 疑似 of the solar corona 日冕, from which their name derives.

所以是因為長得像日冕所以取名 coronavirus。
那 solar corona 日冕 又是什麼?
日冕是環繞太陽周圍的電漿光環， 日全食中都很容易看到；平常也可以透過日冕儀觀測。英文的冕 （corona）字源自拉丁文，意思是冠，再追溯則為古希臘的κορώνη（korōnè，意思為「花環、花冠」）。

4. Deaths 死亡的人數
表達死亡人數有一些常見的變化，如：
Death toll 以及 number of deaths。
Death toll 與 deaths 出現的格式稍微不一樣，
Death toll 通常出現在數字前,
如 India’s coronavirus death toll is nearing the bleak (蒼涼) milestone of 200,000.
Deaths 在數字後,
如 India nears 200,000 COVID deaths.
相關字 Fatalities (fatality) – 意思是事故死者 – 也是一樣在數字後，
如 … with another 2,771 fatalities reported.
5. Testing 檢測
如朗讀文章裡出現的…
“Please note that a huge fall in daily cases … is largely due to a heavy fall in testing,”
請注意，當天案例減少了……主要是因為測試量大幅下降。
Testing 也有相關動詞 test, testing, tested；
那名詞 test 是考試的意思喔！Like exam 😊

疫情相關文章常常用 infections 來取代 cases，如：

Perfect storm 原本來自氣象學，
指特別猛烈的風暴，
這種風暴通常是因為罕見的不利氣象因素同時存在組合而引起的。
7. Vaccination 接種疫苗
相關字有 vaccine 疫苗，
還有動詞 vaccinate, vaccinating, vaccinated。
8. Oxygen cylinders / Oxygen tank 氧氣瓶
朗讀文章裡…
At least two hospitals in Delhi have seen patients 病人 die after oxygen supplies 供應 ran out 耗盡.
那以上 oxygen supplies 就包含了 oxygen tanks 氧氣瓶。

ICU 也叫 critical care unit (CCU)。
【其他單字】
1. Crematoriums 或 crematory (名詞) 火葬場
相關字有 cremation 火葬；
還有相關動詞 cremate, cremating, cremated 是「火化」的意思。

Staff 全部員工 are working around the clock 全天沒日沒夜的, while parks and other empty spaces are also being utilised 使用 (US 拼法 utilized) for cremations 火葬.

Crematoriums in the Indian capital Delhi have been forced to build 建 makeshift funeral pyres, as the city runs out of space to cremate its dead. 這城市將死者火化的空間已經用完了.

我們也很快解釋 makeshift funeral pyres。
Makeshift 的意思是「臨時代用的」，
因為突然需要，所以臨時做的，通常品質比較不好。
Funeral 是「喪禮」的意思，pyres 是柴堆，
所以 makeshift funeral pyres 就是「臨時搭起來喪葬用的柴堆」。
