【這個新聞在說什麼】
1. 土石流、山崩
山崩最正確的英文應該是 landslide。
這個名詞的組合滿直接的：
Land 土地 + Slide 滑動，
滑動的土地 = 山崩 landslide。
A landslide is defined as the movement of a mass of rock, debris, or earth down a slope.
US Geological Society
山崩被定義為大量岩石、碎片或泥土沿斜坡向下移動。
Mudslide 是 landslide 的一種，
台灣常說的「土石流」其實就比較像是 mudslide。
Cambridge dictionary 說 mudslide 是：
大量沿著山坡移動下來的濕泥土，可以導致很多死亡和破壞。
a large amount of wet dirt that moves down a hill or mountain and that can cause a lot of death and destruction

遇到 mudslide 狀況的時候媒體常常會交錯使用 mudslide 和 landslide,
像這篇 CNN 文章 landslide 出現了 12 次，mudslide 出現了 9 次。
Mudslide 還有兩個近義詞 debris flow 或 mudflow。
每次提到 landslide, mudslide 通常都是跟下大雨有關，
CNN 形容大雨使用了：
Heavy rain 以及
Torrential rain 暴雨。
下大雨往往接下來就會出現洪水 / 水災，
常見 flood 或 flooding。
2. 日本目前的狀況
週六 (昨天) 早上 10:30am 的 mudslide 發生在：
日本 Japan，
靜岡縣 Shizuoka prefecture，
熱海市 Atami city。
(離東京 Tokyo 約兩個小時車程)
目前已確認 2 人死亡，
現在是禮拜天中午還有 20 人左右下落不明，
日本政府已派出 700 位警察、消防隊、軍隊，盡力的搜救。
另外，大約 380 民住戶被迫疏散 evacuate，

昨天將近 3 千個住戶停電，那今天禮拜天大部分都已恢復供電了。
3. 有幾個人出來說話
日本首相菅義偉的英文名字是 Yoshihide Suga，
在國際新聞上滿常出現有時會直接以他的 last name Suga 呈現。
Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga expressed his condolences to the victims of the landslide and stressed that emergency workers were doing their utmost to save lives, rescue people and help with evacuations.

日本首相向山崩遇難者表達了哀悼，並強調緊急救援人員正在盡最大努力，
拯救生命、搜救受困的人民和幫助疏散。
CNN 文章裡也出現了台灣！
台灣外交部昨天在 Twitter 向日本發出支持的 tweet，
稱台灣人民對播出的新聞片段感到震驚和極度悲痛。
如果日本需要，我們已準備好提供協助。
Taiwanese people “were shocked and extremely saddened by the news footage that was broadcast. If Japan needs it, we are ready to provide assistance.”

4. 接下來預計會怎麼樣
靜岡縣縣長 Heita Kawakatsu, the governor of Shizuoka prefecture 說：
more rain is expected and said residents should watch out for further landslides

預計會有更多降雨，居民要注意，很可能會再次發生山崩、土石流的狀況。
例如日本 NHK 報導 ，
東京周邊地區以及 Shizuoka 靜岡縣和 Aichi 愛知縣的一些地方，
已發出 evacuation orders 疏散命令，
還有這些縣收到了 landslide warnings 山崩警告：
Shizuoka 靜岡縣, Kanagawa 神奈川縣, Chiba 千葉縣 and Yamanashi prefecture 山梨縣。
This is not going to be the end of landslides 這不會是最後一個山崩，
In fact, 當局預測近期還會再發生。
尤其沿海地區預計週一和周二將有暴雨，
areas along the coast forecast to see torrential rain on Monday and Tuesday,

5. 這種土石流對日本來說是常見的嗎？

日本原本就很容易發生山崩。
有很多原因，其中一個是日本的山地地形，
加上許多土壤都是 volcanic ash 火山灰，
火山灰並不那麼堅固。
過去十年來，
日本每年都平均會發生大大小小 1500 起的 landslides，
比起再之前的十年，數量已成長了將近 5 成。
這意味著 landslides are happening more and more frequently，
山崩越來越頻繁地發生。
另外，於事無補的是：
👉 一半的日本人口都集中在洪水容易發生的地區

1. Wipe out 消滅、抹除
是 phrasal verb 所以 wipe 擦拭 / 抹掉 的這個動詞可以做變化：
wipe, wipes, wiping, wiped out。
Wipe out 出現在今天 CNN 的標題：日本熱海市土石流「完全沖毀」房屋。
… mudslide wipes out homes in Japan’s Atami city

👉 可以用在生命上，例如：
Before an asteroid wiped them out, dinosaurs were already in decline

在小行星消滅它們之前，恐龍 (的數量) 已經在衰退了。
⚠️ Wiped them out
被消滅的對象 them 放在 wipe 跟 out 中間，
這也是很常見的用法。
如上一集說理所當然 take for granted，
一樣可以這樣置入成：Take them for granted。
👉 也可用在錢 / 財富 / 債務上

2. Prone to
朗讀裡出現的例子是：
Japan is prone to landslides 日本容易發生山崩～
Prone 是形容詞，
後面很常搭配 to 這個 preposition 介詞。
Prone to 的意思是：傾向 / 比較容易會 (發生什麼、做什麼）。
所以 Japan is prone to landslides 也可以翻譯成：
日本有發生山崩的傾向。
👉 有些人比較容易被蚊子叮
